Binary Star Systems

Over half of all stars are in binary or multiple systems. Eclipsing binaries show periodic dips in brightness when one star passes in front of the other. The light curve reveals star sizes, masses, and temperatures. Mass transfer occurs when one star overflows its Roche lobe.
