Bioluminescence

Bioluminescence is the production of light by living organisms via a chemical reaction: luciferin + luciferase + O₂ → light. ~76% of deep-sea organisms produce light. Uses include: defense (startling predators), attracting prey (anglerfish lure), communication, and camouflage (counter-illumination). Most bioluminescence is blue-green (480nm) because it travels farthest underwater.
