Crystal Lattice Structures

Metals and ionic compounds form regular crystal lattices. The Simple Cubic (SC) has atoms only at corners (52% packing). Body-Centered Cubic (BCC) adds a center atom (68%). Face-Centered Cubic (FCC) has atoms on each face center (74% โ€” highest for cubic). Diamond cubic is FCC with an interpenetrating sublattice (34%). Coordination number tells how many nearest neighbors each atom has.
