Natural Selection

Organisms with traits better suited to their environment are more likely to survive and reproduce. In a dark forest, dark-colored organisms are camouflaged from predators. Over generations, the population shifts toward the advantageous trait. This is directional selection. Mutation introduces variation; higher predator pressure speeds selection.
