Why Seasons Happen

Earth's axis is tilted 23.4° from its orbital plane. During June solstice, the Northern Hemisphere tilts toward the Sun — longer days, more direct sunlight = summer. During December solstice, it tilts away = winter. At the equinoxes (March/September), neither hemisphere tilts toward the Sun — equal day/night. Seasons are NOT caused by Earth's distance from the Sun.
