Lesson 2.4: Ecological Succession Summary
Key Concepts: Ecological Succession
What is Ecological Succession?
Ecological succession is the gradual change in species composition of a community over time.
- Primary Succession: Occurs in lifeless areas with no soil (e.g., bare rock, lava)
- Secondary Succession: Occurs in areas where a community was disturbed but soil remains (e.g., after a fire)
Stages of Succession
- Pioneer Species: First organisms to colonize (lichens, mosses)
- Intermediate Species: Grasses, shrubs, small trees
- Climax Community: Stable, mature community
