Lesson 6.6: Kites and Trapezoids

Kites and Trapezoids

Trapezoid

A trapezoid has exactly one pair of parallel sides (called bases). The non-parallel sides are called legs.

  • Isosceles trapezoid: Legs are congruent. Base angles are congruent. Diagonals are congruent.
  • Midsegment of a trapezoid: The segment connecting the midpoints of the legs. Its length = (b₁ + b₂) / 2.

Kite

A kite has two pairs of consecutive congruent sides (but opposite sides are NOT congruent).

  • The diagonals are perpendicular.
  • Exactly one diagonal bisects the other.
  • Exactly one pair of opposite angles is congruent.
